What to Expect

from Project Whetstone

A Year of Transformation and Growth

At its core, Project Whetstone is a journey toward healing, connection, and rediscovery of purpose. Here is what participants can expect:

Participants begin with months of trauma-focused therapy, group sessions, and peer mentorship, laying a strong foundation of insight, resilience, and trust.

The year-long program culminates in a two-week adventure through Scotland’s West Highland Way: a 96-mile hike that blends physical challenge with shared reflection, storytelling, and personal growth. Alongside therapists and peer mentors, participants build lasting bonds, reclaim strength and identity, and walk the path toward renewal.

The journey is designed to honor each story, offering space for transformation and connection that endures long after the trail ends.

Looking ahead, participants will soon have access to the Whetstone Resilience Lab (launching 2026), an innovation space for advanced skills development, mentor training, and long-term reintegration tools. This is where healing becomes habit, and where the journey continues through leadership, service, and community.

Project Whetstone isn't just about the trail ahead, it's about what you carry with you and what you leave behind. Our program integrates licensed clinical therapy alongside peer mentorship to address the deeper wounds of trauma, moral injury, and other challenges faced by veterans and first responders.

Monthly Group Sessions
Led by clinicians and supported by peers, these trauma-informed sessions explore the unique psychological toll of military service. Through open dialogue, storytelling, and guided discussion, participants unpack topics like:

  • Understanding military culture and moral injury

  • Processing isolation, shame, and loss

  • Learning tools for emotional regulation and self-forgiveness

Individual Therapy
Each participant has access to one-on-one sessions with a licensed therapist, using evidence-based modalities such as EMDR, CBT, and mindfulness-based interventions. These sessions offer personalized support, giving participants the space to explore their journey at their own pace.

Together, group and individual therapy foster insight, coping strategies, and long-term resilience, allowing participants to rediscover purpose and reconnect with themselves and others.
