Frequently Asked Questions
Have questions? You’re not alone.
Whether you're curious about the trail, the therapy, or how it all comes together, this page is here to help. We’ve gathered the most common questions we receive to give you a clear picture of what to expect, and how to know if Project Whetstone is right for you.

Is this a good fit if I’m not in shape or have physical limitations?
The hike is challenging (averaging 6–10 miles/day over various terrains), but we will work with participants during the year to help them prepare mentally and physically. We encourage applicants of all fitness levels to apply. We care more about your readiness for emotional growth than your hiking experience.
What if I’m in therapy or on medication already?
That’s totally fine. We’ll coordinate care if needed and ensure our therapy complements your existing support. Applicants already engaged in care are often strong candidates for the program.
How much does it cost?
The entire program, including therapy, group work, peer support, and the Scotland hike, is covered by grants and donations. There is no cost to participants. You may be responsible for basic gear, such as hiking boots or backpacks, but we do our best to provide support or resources if cost is a barrier.
How many people are accepted?
Only 6 participants will be selected for each cohort, along with 2 peer mentors and 1 hike assistant. This small group model helps build deep trust, safety, and personalized support.
What’s expected of participants?
We ask that you:
-
Commit to regular therapy and group sessions for 12+ months
-
Be open to peer support and reflection
-
Participate fully in hike preparation and travel (if applicable)
-
Stay in communication with our team
The program is about community, effort, and healing, not perfection.
Can I bring a spouse, friend, or service animal?
This program is designed for individual healing and group bonding. For that reason, participants attend solo. Service animals are considered on a case-by-case basis depending on hike logistics and lodging access. Contact us if you have questions about accommodations.
What if I’m not selected for this cohort?
Don’t worry. We’re planning additional cohorts in the future, and we’ll keep your application on file (with your permission) or invite you to reapply. You can also stay connected through our Resilience Lab, peer mentorship training, and future community events.
What if I don’t want to hike but would still like therapy?
No problem! While the hike is a core part of the Project Whetstone program, our nonprofit clinic, Integrative Psychotherapy of North Carolina offers trauma-focused individual therapy year-round. You can work with a licensed clinician trained in EMDR, Brainspotting, and somatic therapies without participating in the full Whetstone program.
If you’re interested in therapy only, click to visit our therapy services page or contact us to get started. You don’t have to hike a mountain to begin the healing process; we’ll meet you wherever you are.
